Cronulla School of Arts
Cronulla School of Arts has proudly been a part of the Sutherland Shire since 1907. The current building in Surf Road was opened in 1912, to much noise and celebration. Over time the building has undergone many ‘upgrades’. There have been many tenants and uses of the building since then. Today the ground floor hosts the Arts Theatre Cronulla which in 2023 celebrated 60 years of productions and entertainment for residents and visitors. |

Australian Native Plants Society NSW The Sutherland Group of the Australian Plants Society NSW was established in 1963 under our original name Society for Growing Australian Plants, meaning we are celebrating 60 years in 2023. We are a community group aiming to share our knowledge and enthusiasm for Australian native plants in home gardens, public places and the natural environment. We encourage conservation, sharing knowledge and enjoyment of our local native plants to conserve our natural heritage. We have monthly meetings at Gymea with guest speakers on a diversity of plant-related topics. Our plant table each meeting highlights what people grow in their local gardens and what is in flower each month, and our monthly newsletter keeps everyone informed. We have bushwalks and garden visits, and even provide native plant entries for the Easter Show each year to create a colourful display for the public. We have had a long involvement with Joseph Banks Native Plants Reserve at Manooka Place, Kareela where you can enjoy Australian native plants in a lovely garden setting. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Banks collecting botanical specimens at Kurnell in 1770, members helped establish the planted garden in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including the layout, early planting and extensive rockwork. We still contribute to maintenance, provide plant name labels and interpretive signs, and hold events for the public at the reserve. It is open 7 days a week, 9 am to 5 pm. Accessible paths, tables, toilets, electric BBQs. We launched our Coastal Plants of the Royal National Park CD-Rom in 2006 to help non-botanists identify 300 plants on the iconic coast walk. Recognising changes in technology, it is being converted to a free app. |

Brinsleys’ Joinery
The current building was built after a fire destroyed the original building in 1929, where it stands today on the corner of Clio St and Toronto Pde, Sutherland. Both the Brinsley family and the building, one of the few intact examples of inter-war industrial buildings in the Sutherland Shire, are a significant part of the heritage of the area and much of the work to come out of the joinery has greatly contributed to the growth of the Sutherland Shire. In October 1994 Sutherland Shire Council purchased the property with a view to preserving and continuing its function as a fully operational commercial heritage joinery. Demonstrations of some of the restoration machinery and other information is offered on the open day of the festival. |

Hazelhurst Arts Centre
Formerly part of the Holt Estate, the site was purchased by Ben and Hazel Broadhurst in 1945. The two-storey cottage, with its Art Deco style influences, was designed by Ben and Hazel with the help of local architect Harry Smith.
The couple loved gardening and practised recycling and organic farming. They kept goats, horses, a cow and 200 chickens. They also had a mini dairy making cheeses and butter and an orchard of pears, peaches, apples and strawberries. In addition to their farming interests, they were successful businesspeople, managing a shirt-making factory in Rockdale for over 40 years. On retiring, Ben and Hazel gave their time to charities and other causes. They became more involved with their interests in spiritualism. They were fascinated with numerology, astrology, extra-sensory perception, and other psychic phenomena; Ben was president of the Sydney Centre for Psychic Research in the 1950s. The site of Hazelhurst Arts Centre was bequeathed to Sutherland Shire Council in the 1990s by Ben and Hazel with the instruction that Hazelhurst become a place of culture for the whole community. In 2000, after extensive community consultation, Hazelhurst opened its doors as a public arts facility and includes two gallery spaces, an arts centre and a cafe and has become a popular meeting place for visitors from across Southern Sydney and beyond. The Broadhurst’s original cottage has been refurbished and now hosts Hazelhurst’s Artist in Residence program. |

Kirrawee Brick Pit Museum
Where you can see the preserved archaeology of the brick works and learn a bit about how this site operated. Soon after production started in 1912, the works were turning out up to two million bricks a year and, by 1939, annual output had reached seven million. Clay and shale were quarried on site significantly reduced the cost of transporting materials from other areas and kept the factory competitive with other suppliers, particularly through the war years and Great Depression era. Records show that the brick works had several owners over time, starting with the Sutherland Brick Company (1912-1917), Refractory Bricks Limited (1917-1926) and finally the Punchbowl Brick and Tile Company Limited (1927-1961). Following its decommissioning in 1968, the site was cleared of all buildings and the landmark brick chimney was demolished, leaving enough for the museum to display. |

Southern Brass Band
Southern Brass (Sutherland Shire Brass) is a not-for-profit community organisation. The band has its origins in the late 1940’s as the St George District Band and for many years occupied a hall at Hurstville which was demolished during construction of Westfield Shopping Centre. At the Annual General Meeting held on 20th February 1953 at Electricity House, Hurstville the band became known as St George Sutherland Shire Band. In 1961 Sutherland Shire Council granted land for a hall to be erected in Eton Street and the band continued to be known as St George Sutherland Shire Band until July 1973 when the name was changed to Sutherland Shire Silver Band. With incorporation in 2001, the name was changed to Sutherland Shire Brass Inc. Our Public band name was revamped to Southern Brass a few years ago. 2020 saw the commencement of the Southern Youth Concert Band who are proud to showcase their playing ability in concert with the Senior band. Join Southern Brass and Southern Youth Concert Band in a journey of connection through music! In “TIES THAT BIND US: Music to connect us all through time, place and memory” we embark on a musical exploration of the myriad ways in which music acts as a bridge - connecting individuals, communities, and cultures across the vast expanses of time and space. |

Sutherland Shire Historical Society was formed in 1966 as residents in the post-war years became conscious of the Sutherland Shire’s rapid change from a rural outpost to a built up suburb of Sydney. It became a priority to record the changes, thus preserving our history, and to ensure knowledge of our history was available to the local community.
We collect, preserve and disseminate local history in the following ways:

Sutherland Shire Spinners & Weavers
SSSW brings together people who wish to practise the arts of hand spinning, weaving and related fibre crafts. We are a friendly and creative group of spinners, loom and tapestry weavers, felters, dyers, crocheters and knitters from diverse backgrounds and many walks of life. We have one thing in common – the love of our craft! SSSW is one of the oldest established craft associations in the Sutherland Shire. Our group began informal meetings in April 1969, formalised in 1970, and moved to the Cronulla School of Arts. Membership grew rapidly, reflecting a resurgence of interest in handcrafts during the 1960s and 1970s. Workshops and excursions are plentiful during the year. Calendar events include a yearly Winter Wool Fair, challenges, stalls and charity input. We welcome newcomers and enjoy mentoring and helping those who seek to learn new fibre skills. Our group has been involved in the Sutherland Shire Citizen’s Heritage Festival since 1990. In 2019 the group celebrated its 50th anniversary with a retrospective exhibition of members’ work and hosted the launch of the Heritage Festival. *Website: https://sutherlandspinnersandweavers.org.au *Email: sutherlandspinners@gmail.com *Phone number and name of contact person: Susan Duyker 0408283855 or Karen Severn 0419273193 |

Sydney Tramway Museum
Preservation of Sydney's trams by our pioneering volunteers dates from 1950, followed by the formal establishment of the Australian Electric Transport Museum in 1955, incorporated in 1959 as South Pacific Electric Railway Co-operative Society Ltd. Subsequently the business name Sydney Tramway Museum was formulated. The museum's aims always were to preserve tramcars and associated ephemera, record through publications and display Sydney's tramway history and the part played in the growth of urban transport in Sydney and its social history for the benefit of the general public. An important part as a living museum has always been the operation of some tramcars recreating past forms of transport and as an education tool for the younger generations. At present (2023), the Museum (wholly volunteer), located at corner of Pitt St. and Rawson Ave. (Old Princes Hwy.), Loftus, adjacent to Loftus Railway Station, is open Sundays and Wednesdays, with tram-rides operating. *Website: sydneytramwaymuseum.com.au *Email: museumenquiries@sydneytramwaymuseum.com.au *Phone: 9542-3646 *Contact person: Peter Kahn, Public Relations Officer - 0403 472 341 |
