The Continuum Art Society began at Gymea TAFE, which  was running a Fine Arts Certificate course. Lucy Hertz MBE was then head of this department.
At the instigation of Lucy Hertz, student meetings to further the love of art were first held at the Gymea TAFE. Lucy then suggested that the Continuum Art Society be formed so that graduates of the College would be able to continue to meet together to practise and discuss art.  Weekly meetings and workshops began in 1982. Lucy Hertz became the Patron of the Society, along with the TAFE Principal.
With the closure of the Fine Arts faculty at Gymea the society broadened its membership beyond the ex- students of the TAFE. Membership is open to practising artists or those who have an interest in the arts. The Society aims to
  1. Foster personal development in the practice of art and promote an interest in and an understanding of art.
  2. Meet regularly to discuss matters of interest, hear guest speakers and for practical demonstrations and instruction.
  3. Encourage members to exhibit their work.
Continuum has had a long association with Hazelhurst, supporting the establishment of the gallery and participating in gallery events over the last 20 years. We have held our biennial Showcase exhibition at the gallery since its inauguration. Our involvement in the arts in Sutherland Shire has included mural painting, participation in the Heritage Festival for many years and exhibitions both public and private.

As a foundation member of the Combined Art Societies of Sydney, the Continuum Art Society has not only served to promote art in the Sutherland Shire but also in the wider art community of Sydney. Members exhibit in the Sydney wide CASS exhibition each year, gaining places as finalists and winners in a number of categories.

Continuum has a current membership of 60 members may of whom meet each week at Hazelhurst and Sylvania Community Centre to discuss and create art.
