Hazelhurst Arts Centre
Hazelhurst, originally part of the Holt Estate, was purchased by Ben and Hazel Broadhurst in 1945. They designed the two-storey Art Deco style cottage with local architect Harry Smith. The couple practiced recycling and organic farming, keeping various animals and maintaining an orchard. They also managed a shirt-making factory in Rockdale for over 40 years. In retirement, Ben and Hazel dedicated their time to charities and spiritualism, with Ben serving as president of the Sydney Centre for Psychic Research in the 1950s. They bequeathed the Hazelhurst site to Sutherland Shire Council in the 1990s, instructing it to become a cultural hub. In 2000, Hazelhurst opened as a public arts facility with two gallery spaces, an arts centre, and a cafe. The Broadhurst's original cottage has been restored to its original condition & is open to the public on selected days. |
