​Sutherland Shire Historical Society was formed in 1966 as residents in the post-war ​years became conscious of the Sutherland Shire’s rapid change from a rural outpost to a built-up suburb of Sydney. It became a priority to record the changes, thus preserving our history, and to ensure knowledge of our history was available to the local community.
We collect, preserve and disseminate local history in the following ways:

• Hold monthly meetings with a guest speaker focusing on an aspect of local history.
• Hold guided excursions to various historic sites (local and outside the Shire)
• Collect artefacts representing our history from the time of First Nations people, through settlement and development. These are displayed at Sutherland Shire Museum, 88 Venetia Street, Sylvania
• Publish a quarterly Bulletin containing researched and referenced articles on aspects of our local history, as well as first hand recollections of life in the Shire in earlier times.
• Publish books tracing aspects of Sutherland Shire history
• Keep a library of documents and images representing our local history to help answer enquiries from the public and to offer a research facility at our museum. 
• Keep an up-to-date website explaining our activities and upcoming events (www.shirehistory.org) 
• Use Facebook to distribute information about our events (Facebook: Sutherland Shire Historical Society) 

All these activities are conducted by volunteer members of the Society.
