SSSW brings together people who wish to practise the arts of hand spinning, weaving and related fibre crafts. We are a friendly and creative group of spinners, loom and tapestry weavers, felters, dyers, crocheters and knitters from diverse backgrounds and many walks of life. We have one thing in common – the love of our craft!
SSSW is one of the oldest established craft associations in the Sutherland Shire. Our group began informal meetings in April 1969, formalised in 1970, and moved to the Cronulla School of Arts. Membership grew rapidly, reflecting a resurgence of interest in handcrafts during the 1960s and 1970s. Workshops and excursions are plentiful during the year. Calendar events include a yearly Winter Wool Fair, challenges, stalls and charity input. We welcome newcomers and enjoy mentoring and helping those who seek to learn new fibre skills Our group has been involved in the Sutherland Shire Citizen’s Heritage Festival since 1990. In 2019 the group celebrated its 50th anniversary with a retrospective exhibition of members’ work and hosted the launch of the Heritage Festival.
